SPAY is the Union of 12 municipalities which are around the mountain area of Hymittos. The scope of the union is to take action in protecting the mountain forest from fire and other dangers and to coordinate similar actions from the municipalities-members. Also to coordinate the actions of the volunteer organizations in the event of fire in assistance to the fire brigade. Major part of the union activities is the reforestation of the burned areas, the irrigation of the newly plants and the watering of reforested areas.
The prevention of forest fires include organization of information days, the removal of flammable dry grass and twigs, cutting and removal of trees low branches, cleaning of debris and waste. SPAY’s actions include information and awareness campaigns. Currently, the Union staff consists of 14 employees and has project experience in handling EC projects, especially "Life", and has received appropriate training in order to be able to respond to area protection projects.
